Distillation Column Installation and Transportation

A distillation column is a cylindrical vertical vessel of constant or variable cross-section, equipped with internal heat- and mass-transfer devices and auxiliary units, designed to separate liquid mixtures into fractions, each of which contains substances with similar boiling points.

A classic column is a vertical cylinder inside which contact devices — trays or packing — are located. Accordingly, distillation columns are divided into tray and packed types.

Distillation columns are used in distillation, extractive distillation, liquid extraction, heat exchange between vapour and liquid, and other processes.

The diameter of industrial distillation columns can reach 16 metres, and the height — 90 metres and more.

There are quite a few specifics in organising and carrying out the installation works. Petrochemical equipment such as distillation columns are heavy units that are the main process equipment of petrochemical production.

The problem of transporting and installing petrochemical equipment remains very acute today, because the weight of such cargo can reach more than 1,000 tonnes.
