Portal lifts for lifting bridges are used in cases where it is necessary to transport goods with non-standard weight and dimensions, which is often the most complex and costly area of logistics. Their delivery often causes interruptions in traffic on roads and damage to the roadway, and often seems impossible due to the passages or arches located above the highway. In order to avoid problems with the transportation of such items, a number of rules have been developed, and special engineering solutions are applied if necessary.
Specifics of transportation of especially large goods
Many questions arise when delivering super-large units, disassembly of which is impossible. These can be various turbines, reactor parts, housings and engines of special machines. If transportation by rail, sea and even air is somehow solved, then highways are not designed for the transportation of objects whose height exceeds 4 meters, and the length is 20 meters or more.

If there is a bridge along the way of the road train, its dismantling will be too time-consuming and expensive, the optimal solution may be to climb using jacks or lifts.
Such an operation, carried out in 2013 during the transportation of the reactor in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, can serve as a model of competent and coordinated actions.
To lift the bridge, you can use portal lifts, the brand of which will depend on the weight and design parameters. The weight of the metal transition bridge is about 300 kg, so the hydraulic portal SBL 1100 can be selected, having a carrying capacity of up to 1100 tons, designed to lift objects to a height of 12.5 m.
The advantages of such a lift include:
- Parameters that meet the requirements and the availability of a reserve for all indicators;
- Safety of use, all hoses and cables are hidden inside the hoist tower;
- Rails are easily mounted and securely fixed in the right place of the road;
- Smooth lift is provided by telescopic hydraulic cylinders.
Keep in mind that the portal is easily transported to the place of work. The design consists of two towers moving on rollers on pre-set rails. The lift approaches the bridge, is installed under the span and is fixed.
The horizontal span is undocked from the supports and securely held on the portal towers. Then, with the help of jacks, the structure rises 2 meters up. This allows you to easily pass the train under the bridge. After that, the span falls into its place and is securely attached. The accuracy of installation does not exceed 1 mm.
The key to the success of the operation lies in the correct preparation of the technical process and accurate calculation. The use of the portal lift saved time and money in transporting the reactor, which has a height of 5.5 meters and a weight of about 1,300 tons, setting a precedent for future transportation.
